Yogi Of The Month: Mike Simms

Meet Mike Simms our manduka sponsored Green Yogi of the Month for March! Mike is newer to the practice of yoga, he started about a year ago, but has made Heather’s Tuesday and Thursday morning classes a part of his active routine when he’s not at his day (and night) job of restauranteur. If you have enjoyed a beer and burger at Simmzy’s, the raw bar at Fishing with Dynamite, the caramelized brussels sprouts at Tin Roof, the innovative and ever changing menu at MB Post, or the delectable fresh baked muffins at The Kettle you have experienced part of Mike Simms and his family’s hard work. Congratulations Mike! Read on to Be Inspired!

OCCUPATION: Restaurateur

FUN FACT ABOUT YOU:  When I was 13, I won the shuffleboard tournament aboard a cruise ship, beating dozens of Floridian retirees. My mom may still have the green workout suit that was the grand prize!

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE INSTRUCTOR AND WHY?  Heater Archer:  Her class kicks my butt.  She comes prepared.  As she teaches she “positive spotlights” – pointing out the proper positions, which makes me correct to that position.  I learn something new every time.

WHAT IS YOUR INTENTION FOR YOUR YOGA PRACTICE?  My intentions are flexibility and strength.  (What I really want to write is not to fart in class)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE YOGA POSE?  Savasana.  If anyone says differently, they are lying!  For an active pose, right now it’s handstands.  I’ve never been able to do one until recently.

WHAT SONG SHOULD BE ON EVERY YOGA PLAYLIST?  Very inappropriate, but AC/DC’s “It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll.”  (That’s why I’m not a yoga instructor).  Maybe if it was redone by a soft instrumentalist or something.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?  Passionate people.  They are infectious and I love being around them.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING AND HOW HAS YOGA IMPROVED YOUR LIFE?  I’ve been practicing for around a year.  I’m an active person, I love to surf, golf, jog, cycle, pretty much anything outdoors.  If you are not aware, I’m getting older and touching my toes was getting more difficult.  Yoga has made all of these other activities more enjoyable by increasing my flexibility and core strength.  Thank you Green Yogi for keeping me fit and keeping if fun!
