Inversions 101

My old teacher used to say “an inversion a day keeps the doctor away!”  And I’d like to clarify that it’s not just the super advanced inversions…  Anytime your heart is above your head you are inverted in yoga speak and much like when you enjoy the yummy goodness of an apple your body is reaping the rewards from an inversion practice.

When you go upside down you are

  • improving your circulation and cardiovascular system
  • calming your mind and relieving stress
  • reducing pain in overworked muscles
  • strengthening your core and ligaments
  • enhancing your concentration
  • draining stagnant blood from your legs
  • combatting the aging process (reduce shrinking: )
  • and having fun!

Even if you opt out of headstands and handstands during class you practice a bunch of inversions probably not even realizing it.  Some foundational inversions are

  • down dog (adho mukha svanasana)
  • dolphin
  • forward fold (uttanasana)
  • wide leg forward fold (prasarita padottanasana)
  • shoulder stand (salamba sarvangasana)
  • bridge (setubhandasana)
  • legs up the wall

Ready to have fun, explore, and learn more advanced inversions?  Join Linda Baffa this Saturday April 6th from 3:30-5:30pm at The Green Yogi for an Advance Your Practice Inversion Workshop, $25.  You will flow, sweat, and go upside down!

Be Inspired,

Kelly
