Spring’s First Green Yogi Of The Month

Meet Emily Boken.  UCLA Anesthesiologist, Loyal High School super fan, and committed Green Yogi.  With an incredibly stressful career that’s described as 99% boredom 1% sheer terror Emily has practiced almost 600 times at The Green Yogi in less than 3 years.  She is a true inspiration to our team and our sponsor Manduka!  We are so happy to honor her, read on to Be Inspired, Kelly

PROFESSION:  I am an anesthesiologist at UCLA.  This job has been described as 99 percent boredom and 1 percent sheer terror.  I think that is why I show up at The Green Yogi so often!

FUN FACT:  I am the youngest from a family of 9 kids–I have 6 older brothers and 2 older sisters.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE INSTRUCTORS?  For vinyasa flow, Jamie Horgan and Tamal Dodge.  They are so talented!

WHAT IS YOUR INTENTION FOR YOUR YOGA PRACTICE?  Most often my intention is gratitude.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE YOGA POSE?  Any heart opening pose.

WHEN YOU AREN’T ON THE MAT, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU?  I am a super fan of Loyola High School athletics, especially basketball, volleyball, and baseball.  GO CUBS!!  I was in the stands at most of the basketball games this year.  One of my nephews is 7 feet tall and plays center on the b-ball team. I’ve only been able to convince him to come to one yoga class so far, but I am working on that.  I am also trying to convince him to play for UCLA in a couple of years.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?  Last week I saw the premiere of documentary called G-Dog.  The star is Fr. Gregory Boyle, a priest and family friend who has worked with gang members in East Los Angeles.  He has also written a book about his experiences.  What an unbelievably courageous, generous person! (And he is also very funny.)  Right now I am also inspired by March Madness.  And Pinterest.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA AND HOW HAS YOGA IMPROVED YOUR LIFE? About two years.  I didn’t really exercise much during my medical training.  As a result I lost a lot of flexibility, which I have been able to regain through yoga.  The overall stress level is way down now that I am at yoga so frequently.  Thanks Green Yogi!!
