Silver Linings

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but it’s on my list of movies to watch!

My silver lining this morning came from my 11 month old son.  He loves to wake up between the hours of 5 and 5:30AM, he is so HAPPY at this time it’s impossible not to smile and laugh with him in his joy.  Having such a happy alarm clock is fantastic in itself, but this morning when I brought him into the kitchen to get a glass of water the entire front of our house was illuminated… by the moon!  The sight was inspiring with the inky sky, full moon blazing white, and a long reflection shimmering on the ocean.

The full moon, which was yesterday, is a time of completion and manifestation of the energy that was set forth on the new moon.  Full moons (the next one will be March 27th) are a natural time to reflect back on sources of light and the fullness of life.  Because the body is made up of about 70% water the moon naturally has a strong impact on both body and mind, much like the ocean tides, and impacting our yoga practice.

Ever wondered what the differences are between a full moon flow, new moon flow, or any other flow?  On full moon days the pull of the moon is strong and our prana (life force) moves upward, leaving us feeling headstrong and liable to push beyond our limits.  Teachers at The Green Yogi are mindful of our egos and give us grounding practices to help maintain our balance.  On new moon days, the pull of the moon is diminished and we can lack motivation, therefore expect a more energizing practice to reinvigorate and perhaps even more important, time to set intentions to manifest over the upcoming lunar cycle.   During the middle of the lunar cycle energy is more balanced and some yogis, especially Ashtanga yogis, prefer to only practice during this time.

I am constantly reminded by my pint sized boy to see with my heart, be in the moment, and find the silver linings.  I have to admit most mornings I drag myself out of bed and bring him into our bed to nurse and get a few more moments of quiet before he’s really on the go.  I felt complete gratitude carrying him on my hip this morning when I went to the kitchen instead and saw the full moon fade into daylight.

Be Inspired,
