However, for myself massages always seemed indulgent.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE massages, but they’ve always been a special treat and I’ve never thought about prioritizing massages.

If you’re like me, we should change that asap.  And if you get massages regularly, you’re super smart.  The research is conclusive, massages have WAY more benefits than just feeling great.  Not only does massage ease sore muscles and reduce inflammation post work out, but a rub down can help you manage aggression, stress, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, depression, eating disorders, the list goes on and on.  Getting a massage regularly is important and necessary for better health.  (I love when being healthy coincides with something I love to do, just like yoga!)

How Massage Helps

For Managing Depression and Anxiety: massage boosts dopamine and serotonin, the happy neurotransmitters, and reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, resulting in better moods and lower blood pressure.

Brain Boost: massage increases attention span and helps you complete tasks faster.

Easing Pain: massage helps with range of motion.  Paired with yoga you’ll experience a decrease in stiffness and your body will function better.

No More Headaches: massage decreases tension, bye bye tension headache.

Improved Sleep: massage is relaxing and promotes sleep because of the affect on the delta waves, the brain waves connected to deep sleep.

Immunity Boost: massage boosts disease fighting white blood cells keeping you healthier.

PMS: massage can decrease bloat and improve mood.  Benefits you and those around you!

Look Better: massage increases blood flow and encourages your lymphatic system, responsible for immunity, to drain, helping your skin to glow.

It’s not always easy to prioritize yourself but getting a massage is a beneficial and feel good way to improve your health.  Like yoga, massage feels great and is awesome for you.  It doesn’t have to cost a fortune either.

Although nice, there’s no need to go to a fancy hotel and pay $$$ to get the health benefits of massage.  Places like The Massage Spot offer more affordable packages.  Find the nearest massage school, you can get a 60 minute massage for as little as $25!  Are you a “freegan?” Have a friend, boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse go to work on your shoulders.  As little as 10 minutes of massage regularly can benefit your health, and that’s what it’s all about.
