Got Milk?

If you’re anything like my family we not only have milk but we have cow’s milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and like right now we have a combo almond coconut milk…

Why so many milk options?  For us my husband likes his 2% cow’s milk and I like everything else.

Full disclosure, he used to use soy milk in our morning smoothies but stopped when I realized my skin would breakout after a few consecutive mornings of soy.  That’s was enough evidence for me to avoid it forever.

He has gone back to the milk of his youth where as I kept exploring.  My new favorites are of the almond and coconut varieties.  I prefer them unsweetened (no added sugars) and I think they’re creamier and better tasting anyway.  My only gripe is 99% percent of coffee joints do not keep them in stock, and I NEED my morning brew.  Which is why I’m ecstatic that Four Daughters Kitchen right across from The Green Yogi  has almond milk and can create the most delicious lattes I’ve ever had!

But if you’re still wondering who’s the milkiest of them all here are the most popular milks head to head.

Based on a one-cup serving

Almond Milk

[ALMONDs1]

  • calories: 40
  • fat: 3.5 grams
  • sugar: 0 grams
  • protein: 1 gram
  • vitamin D and calcium: 25% and 30%
  • taste: slightly sweet and nutty, delicious in coffee and cereal

Soy Milk

[ALMONDs2]

  • calories: 110
  • fat: 5 grams
  • sugar: 6 grams
  • protein: 7 grams
  • vitamin D and calcium: 30% and 40%
  • taste: slightly sweet, chalky, and a bit bitter in my opinion.  The darker color always throws me off.

Coconut Milk

[ALMONDs4]
  • calories: 80
  • fat: 3.5 grams
  • sugars: 0 gram
  • protein: 1 gram
  • vitamin D and calcium: 25 % and 45%
  • taste: creamy with a light coconut flavor.

Cow’s Milk

[ALMONDs5]

  • calories: 130
  • fat: 5 grams
  • sugar: 13 grams
  • protein: 8 grams
  • vitamin D and calcium: 25% and 35%

To summarize…  alternative milks are lower in calories and sugars while cow’s milk is higher in calories, fat, sugar, and protein.  All options are pretty comparable in vitamin D and calcium because the alternatives are fortified.

Try them out, see what you like best!

Be Inspired,

  1. Sounds exactly like our household! My all-time favorite right now is the Vanilla Unsweetened Almond Milk from Trader Joe’s…Delicious and so far the cleanest I’ve found as far as ingredients. When it comes to coffee though I find it’s just not the same as using creamer or half-n-half. It never seems to mix right. :-/
