When I walk into the garden at The Green Yogi I am immediately relaxed because it feels like such a sanctuary. The huge birds of paradise, stone fountain, wood panelling along the walls, comfy orange couches, lit candles in hurricanes, soft green grass carpet under my toes, and friendly faces all seem to melt my stresses away.
But my body slips to a different state as I enter the lobby and inhale our signature scent candle, OM, that owner, Mary Strong, designed. Mary recently shared her inspiration for the scent that not only zens our olfactory systems in the studio but proceeds from the sales of the candles are donated to Women For Women International.
Why did you want to create a signature scent for The Green Yogi?
I designed these candles awhile ago to create a signature scent for the studio so when guests walk in it stimuates their sense of smell, one of the strongest sense connections, and immediately creates a sense of calm and serenity before their class begins.
What are the scents in the OM candle?
I chose red current and blood orange. It’s a combination of spice and citrus, which creates a sense of warmth and freshness that makes you feel like you’re wrapped in a cozy clean blanket that just came out of the dryer. It’s almost like we’re giving you a warm hug each time you walk in the door. So right away the brain says “ahhh….I can relax” and your mind begins to let go of all the “stuff” associated with your day. When that happens the process of becoming present and focused on your practice is much faster.
Why name the candles OM?
I decided to call the candles OM because the chanting of om drives away all worldly thought and removes distraction and infuses new vigor in the body, which is what this scent is meant to do.
Why do you sell the candles at the studio?
I found that more and more guests wanted to buy them, so they could create that same sense of serenity wherever they are. Studies have show that pleasant fragrances have a positive effect on mood. In addition, I wanted to go one step further, and donate the proceeds from the OM candle to an organization that has always been close to my heart, Women For Women International. Women for Women International supports women in war-torn regions with financial and emotional aid, job-skills training, rights education and small business assistance so they can rebuild their lives.
This goes beyond sponsoring a woman to go to school. It is a bonding experience between two cultures. We will receive monthly letters from our sisters, involved with Women for Women, that detail life in a country that we will probably never have the opportunity to visit. It’s a chance to share stories and grow together despite borders. We will be sharing these letters with our yoga family at The Green Yogi, so they can learn and connect as well, and hopefully get involved in supporting these women who are looking for a better life through education. I think it’s important to become aware of what’s happening within our community, but also outside our community, so we can touch as many lives as possible in a positive way!
